> Connect the Hi Doctor MCP connector at https://mcp.hi-doctor.ai/mcp. Add this URL as a remote HTTP MCP server in your client, then sign in and authorise access through OAuth. Setup: https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/mcp/connect.
>
> The REST API base is https://api.hi-doctor.ai. Hi Doctor Docs at https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/mcp searches documentation; connect to the product endpoint above for patient tools.
>
> Hi Doctor operates across the whole European Union: residents of all 27 EU member states can use the service, and every consultation is reviewed by an EU-licensed doctor. Every consultation is reviewed in full by an EU-licensed doctor, who decides on medical grounds only. No algorithm, assistant or API call approves a consultation, issues a prescription or changes a dose. The service is available in eight languages: English, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Portuguese and Chinese.
>
> ## Rules an assistant must follow
>
> - Never invent, assume or infer a medical answer. "I don't know" is a real answer: ask the patient to pick the closest option rather than guessing for them.
> - Never give medical advice and never suggest a medication or a dose. An EU-licensed doctor decides those.
> - If a questionnaire returns `ineligible`, say so plainly. Do not retry with altered answers.
> - Before anything that costs money or cancels a plan, state exactly what will happen and get an explicit yes.
> - Cancellation takes effect at the **end of the paid period**, not immediately. Say so.
> - An early order is irreversible: it creates the renewal consultation immediately and uses up the period's one early order. Explain that and get an explicit yes.
> - Prescription and invoice links are medical documents. A `signed_redirect` link opens without signing in: give it only to the patient, never repeat it anywhere shared.
> - Send option `value`s, not the labels shown to the patient. Labels are translated, values are stable.
> - Never ask for card details. Payment happens on Stripe's hosted checkout via a link.
> - On severe or sudden symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe allergic reaction, suicidal thoughts), stop and direct the patient to their local emergency number.

# Connect Hi Doctor to VS Code

> Add the Hi Doctor remote MCP server to VS Code with MCP: Add Server, sign in on hi-doctor.ai, choose the tools, and disconnect when you are done.

Hi Doctor is a remote MCP server at `https://mcp.hi-doctor.ai/mcp`. In VS Code you add it with **MCP: Add Server**, then sign in on hi-doctor.ai when the server starts, and the chat agent can use the Hi Doctor tools you select. No client ID, secret or header is needed in the configuration.

Last reviewed: 2026-11-04

Sign-in and approval are the same as in every client; see
[Connect](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/mcp/connect.md).

## Add the server

**1. Run MCP: Add Server**

Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS) and run
**MCP: Add Server**, or open **Chat: Open Customizations > MCP Servers**
and select **Add Server**. Choose the HTTP server type.

**2. Enter the URL**

Enter `https://mcp.hi-doctor.ai/mcp` and name the server `hi-doctor`.

**3. Choose where to save it**

Choose where to save it: the workspace (`.vscode/mcp.json`, or the
portable `.mcp.json` when VS Code offers it) or a global destination such
as **Copilot Global**, which applies to every workspace.

`.vscode/mcp.json` is the workspace file every VS Code install reads. It uses
a top-level `servers` object:

```json .vscode/mcp.json theme={null}
{
  "servers": {
    "hi-doctor": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.hi-doctor.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

### The portable `.mcp.json` file

VS Code offers the portable `.mcp.json` destination (top-level `mcpServers`)
when its workspace-root configuration setting is enabled; it is marked
experimental. Use one format per file; do not put a `servers` object in
`.mcp.json` or an `mcpServers` object in `.vscode/mcp.json`.

```json .mcp.json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hi-doctor": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.hi-doctor.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

## Trust and sign-in

Servers saved in the workspace inherit the workspace's trust: in a trusted
workspace they start without a separate prompt. Servers from other sources show
a trust dialog when they first start or when their configuration changes.

When the server starts, VS Code opens Hi Doctor's sign-in page in your browser.
Sign in and approve as described on
[Connect](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/mcp/connect.md#how-connecting-works). No client ID, secret or header
is needed in the configuration.

## Choose the tools

In the Chat view, pick the agent, then select **Configure Tools** and tick the
Hi Doctor tools the agent may use. You can also reference a tool directly in a
prompt with `#`. Select only the Hi Doctor tools you need; a long tool list
crowds the agent's context, and VS Code caps how many tools one chat request
can have enabled.

Use **MCP: List Servers** to start, stop or restart the server and to open its
output log.

## Disconnect

Run **MCP: List Servers**, select `hi-doctor` and stop it, then delete its entry
from `.vscode/mcp.json` (or `.mcp.json`) or from your global configuration. See
[Disconnecting](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/mcp/connect.md#disconnecting) for how long access already issued
lasts.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a client ID to use Hi Doctor in VS Code?

No. Add only the server URL. VS Code registers itself with Hi Doctor and opens the sign-in page in your browser.

### Should I use .mcp.json or .vscode/mcp.json?

Use .vscode/mcp.json unless VS Code offers the portable .mcp.json destination in your setup. Each file has its own format, so do not mix them.

### Does VS Code ask me to trust the Hi Doctor server?

Not when it is saved in a trusted workspace: workspace servers inherit its trust and start without a separate prompt. Servers from other sources show a trust dialog first.

### Do I have to enable every Hi Doctor tool?

No. Under Configure Tools tick only the tools you need; a long list crowds the agent's context.

### How do I stop or restart the Hi Doctor server?

Run MCP: List Servers to start, stop or restart it and to open its output log.
