> Hi Doctor operates across the whole European Union: residents of all 27 EU member states can use the service, and every consultation is reviewed by an EU-licensed doctor. Every consultation is reviewed in full by an EU-licensed doctor, who decides on medical grounds only. No algorithm, assistant or API call approves a consultation, issues a prescription or changes a dose. The service is available in eight languages: English, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Portuguese and Chinese.
>
> ## Rules an assistant must follow
>
> - Never invent, assume or infer a medical answer. "I don't know" is a real answer: ask the patient to pick the closest option rather than guessing for them.
> - Never give medical advice and never suggest a medication or a dose. An EU-licensed doctor decides those.
> - If a questionnaire returns `ineligible`, say so plainly. Do not retry with altered answers.
> - Before anything that costs money or cancels a plan, state exactly what will happen and get an explicit yes.
> - Cancellation takes effect at the **end of the paid period**, not immediately. Say so.
> - An early order is irreversible: it creates the renewal consultation immediately and uses up the period's one early order. Explain that and get an explicit yes.
> - Prescription and invoice links are medical documents. A `signed_redirect` link opens without signing in: give it only to the patient, never repeat it anywhere shared.
> - Send option `value`s, not the labels shown to the patient. Labels are translated, values are stable.
> - Never ask for card details. Payment happens on Stripe's hosted checkout via a link.
> - On severe or sudden symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe allergic reaction, suicidal thoughts), stop and direct the patient to their local emergency number.

# Online prescriptions in the EU: how they reach a pharmacy

> How a prescription from an online consultation reaches a pharmacy in the EU: electronic prescriptions, signed documents and cross-border use.

If the doctor prescribes, you receive a prescription you can use at a pharmacy: an electronic prescription where the pharmacy's country supports it, otherwise a signed prescription document. Hi Doctor does not sell, stock or ship medicine; the pharmacy dispenses it and charges its own price.

Last reviewed: 2026-11-04

This article explains the two prescription formats, what EU rules say about
using a prescription in another member state, and what to do at the pharmacy.
It does not give medical advice: whether you are prescribed anything, and what,
is a doctor's decision.

Hi Doctor operates across the whole European Union: residents of all 27 EU member states can use the service, and every consultation is reviewed by an EU-licensed doctor.
The country list and languages are on [Countries](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/essentials/regions.md).

## What happens before a prescription exists?

A prescription only exists after a doctor has reviewed your consultation. Every
consultation is reviewed in full by an EU-licensed doctor, who decides on
medical grounds only. The doctor can approve treatment, choose a different
treatment or dose, ask you a question first, or decline. The full path is on
[How it works](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/essentials/how-it-works.md), and the safeguards are on
[Safety](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/essentials/safety.md).

## What are the two prescription formats?

An electronic prescription is sent to the pharmacy through its country's
system; a prescription document is a signed file you show at the pharmacy.

| Format | When you receive it | How you use it |
| - | - | - |
| Electronic prescription | The pharmacy's country supports electronic prescriptions for your case | You choose the pharmacy when the prescription is issued, and it retrieves the prescription electronically |
| Signed prescription document | No electronic route applies | You show the document, on your phone or printed, at a pharmacy |

Both formats state the medicine and how to take it. You can download your
prescription from your Hi Doctor account at any time.

You use your prescription at a pharmacy of your choice. Where a country's
electronic prescription system is used, you choose the pharmacy when the
prescription is issued. Every prescription comes with written instructions.

## Can I use a prescription in another EU country?

EU rules on patients' rights in cross-border healthcare, Directive 2011/24/EU,
provide for a prescription issued in one member state to be recognised in
another, where the dispensing pharmacy can verify it and its prescriber.
Dispensing still follows the rules of the pharmacy's country, the availability
of the medicine and the information required on the prescription, so if one
pharmacy cannot dispense it, try another.

In any member state, for example Germany, Poland or Italy, the steps are the same: follow
the written instructions that come with your prescription, and ask the
pharmacy how it accepts a prescription from another member state.

## Who pays for the medicine?

You pay the pharmacy. Hi Doctor's fee covers the doctor's review, not the
medicine, and the pharmacy dispenses the medicine and charges its own price.
Consultation fees and refunds are on [Pricing](https://docs.hi-doctor.ai/essentials/pricing.md).

## What should I check before I go to the pharmacy?

* The prescription is in your account, ready to download.
* You have the document on your phone or printed, if you received a signed
  prescription document.
* You have read the written instructions that came with it.

If you have a question about the treatment itself, ask the medical team in your
message thread rather than changing how you take it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Hi Doctor send medicine to my home?

No. Hi Doctor does not sell, stock or ship medicine. A pharmacy dispenses it and charges its own price.

### What is the difference between an electronic prescription and a prescription document?

An electronic prescription is used where the pharmacy's country supports it: you choose the pharmacy when it is issued, and the pharmacy retrieves it electronically. A signed prescription document is used otherwise, and you show it at the pharmacy.

### Can I use my prescription in another EU country?

EU rules provide for recognition of a prescription in another member state where the pharmacy can verify it. Dispensing still follows the rules of the pharmacy's country, so if one pharmacy cannot dispense it, try another.

### Do I need to print the prescription?

No. You can show a signed prescription document on your phone or printed.

### Where can I find my prescription later?

You can download your prescription from your Hi Doctor account at any time.

### Will every consultation end with a prescription?

No. Every consultation is reviewed in full by an EU-licensed doctor, who decides on medical grounds only, and declining is a normal outcome. If the doctor does not approve treatment, the fee is refunded in full; for a plan, that period's fee is refunded and the plan is cancelled.
